There are various myths and facts related to the Holi Celebration in India.
One of the major stories or myths linked with this festival is story of Kamadeva. It is said that Lord Shiva opened his third eye to terminate God Kamadeva. Linked with this incident many people offer mango blossoms together with sandalwood paste on this day.
The practice of throwing cow-dung into the fire saying all slang spoken to Holika who was sent to kill Bhakt Prahlad. She was blessed being intact and protected when walking through fire. Prahlad ,a great devotee of Lord Vishnu who denied worshiping King Hiranyakashipu, brother of Holika, was sent on fire along with her .But he came out intact due to his strong belief in Lord Vishnu.
Another fact related with Holi celebration is the love play by Holi Pichkari between Radha and Krishna playing with Holi colors. This act of playing with holi Herbal colors is mimicked with props throughout India. It is much more prominent in Northern Indian territories and celebrated in the March on full moon day i.e. Phalguni.
